Over the last few years, Missouri has seen a surge in openly LGBT elected officials, including within the state legislature. In 2004, Jeanette Mott-Oxford was elected as a state representative. Two years later, Jolie Justus made history by becoming Missouri’s first openly LGBT state senator. Now, Michael Colona is running to represent District 67 in the Missouri State House of Representatives, managing a strong campaign to further increase the power and influence of the LGBT community in the state capitol. Over the past 10 years, Michael has worked to strengthen the progressive voice in Missouri. He has volunteered on several campaigns, including Nancy Farmer’s 2002 campaign for the U.S. Senate and Russ Carnahan during his successful election to Congress in 2004. In his activism, Michael has served as committee chairman for the 15th Ward Regular Democratic Committee in St. Louis, as well as a Board Member for PROMO Missouri, which is the statewide LGBT political activist organization. Michael has attended and completed several training seminars sponsored by the Missouri Democratic Party, which have prepared him for this campaign. As an attorney, Michael is active in the Missouri Bar Association as well as the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys. While this will be a competitive race, Michael is out meeting voters and raising the funds necessary to establish himself as the front-runner. The current incumbent for District 67 is termed out, leaving this race wide-open in the decisive Democratic Primary. To date, Michael has received endorsements from the 15th Ward Regular Democratic Ward Committee; 13th Ward Democratic Committee; State Representative Mike Vogt; State Representative Jameela Nasheed; State representative Rodney Hubbard; the Honorable Judge Debra Caranahan; Gas Worker’s Union and former Missouri State Treasurer Nancy Farmer.
