Christine Johnson was first elected to the Utah State House of Representatives in 2006, and serves alongside Senator Scott McCoy and Representative Jackie Biscupski as one of three openly LGBT members in the state legislature. Christine has served her community as both an elected and appointed official. Prior to serving in the state legislature, Christine was appointed by the Salt Lake City Mayor to the Salt Lake Human Rights Commission. As a leader in the fight for equality, Christine has volunteered for several progressive groups, including as a Board member of Equality Utah, the State’s Gay & Lesbian Political Advocacy Group. Christine is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, a position she has used to keep her colleagues focused on LGBT issues. She also sits on the Equality Utah Legal Panel, which works to investigate how to improve Utah’s Adoption Laws. In addition to her serving as a speaker at Equality Utah’s Campaign Training Day, she continues to lecture at the group’s Lobby Training Days to galvanize LGBT citizens in Utah. Christine is currently working with Senator Scott McCoy to establish a new branch of Stonewall Democrats in Utah. As a progressive that values diversity, Christine has joined in a bi-partisan effort to create a Women's Caucus for the eighteen female members of the Utah Legislature and works through her Women's Leadership Project to add more women's voices to the legislature in the future. Christine was overwhelmingly elected in 2006 by her constituents, and she is expecting to win another term in the state house in 2008. Keeping this important voice at the table is crucial for LGBT citizens in Utah. Christine will continue working with Senator McCoy and Representative Buscupksi to improve the lives of LGBT Americans, one voice and one vote at a time.
