San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano has been a leader in the San Francisco LGBT community for over 17 years. Now, he has set his sights on succeeding Mark Leno as the next Assemblyman from California’s 13th District. While Leno has been a vital LGBT voice in the state legislature, Tom’s victory would ensure that the LGBT community maintains this important seat at the table.
Tom has been an openly LGBT elected official since 1990, having served as president of the San Francisco School Board as well as the Board of Supervisors, of which he is currently a member. Prior to being an elected official, Tom served as a classroom teacher for more than 20 years. He came out as a gay schoolteacher to protest the exclusion of sexual orientation in the school district’s non-discrimination clause. This policy was later changed.
Tom went on to sponsor the Equal Rights Benefits Ordinance, the landmark domestic partnership legislation in San Francisco. Throughout his career, he has authored and sponsored LGBT-friendly legislation to create domestic partner benefits, support transgender health benefits, obtain AIDS funding, protect safe sex education programs, and support a host of programs benefiting LGBT youths and seniors.
In his campaign for the state assembly, Tom has secured key endorsements and has established himself as the front-runner in this race. His endorsements thus far include Assemblyman Leno; State Senator Carole Migden; Supervisor Bevan Dufty; City Treasurer Jose Cisneros; Board of Education President; Mark Sanchez and State Senator Sheila Kuehl. Tom is running a strong campaign and is positioning himself to become a powerful voice in the state legislature.
