Former Deputy State Controller Laurette Healey has made a name for herself throughout California as a community activist. As a leader in the Los Angeles LGBT community, she has served on the board of HRC Board of Governors, Equality California, and Stonewall Democrats. In addition to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, Laurette has the unanimous endorsement of the entire California State LGBT caucus, including: Assembly Budget Chair, John Laird, Assembly House Ways and Means Chair, Mark Leno, Senator Sheila Kuehl, Senator Christine Kehoe, Senate Majority Whip, Carole Migden, the Honorable Jackie Goldberg, as well as from former State Controller Steve Westly, the California League of Conservation Voters, and the California Police Chiefs Association. A cancer survivor, Laurette knows the importance of developing a comprehensive health care initiative to serve all of the residents of California and has received the endorsement of State Senator Sheila Kuehl, author of the landmark Healthcare for all legislation, SB 840. Laurette is involved in an extremely competitive democratic primary race for the 40th Assembly District open seat. Facing two well-funded establishment candidates, Laurette must raise substantial funds to deliver her message to the voters in her district. Her two main opponents have already proved that they are willing to fight a nasty campaign, and Laurette needs to get her messaging out ahead of the smear campaign that is headed her way. Eighty percent of the California State Assembly’s women’s caucus will be termed out next year. With your help, Laurette Healey, the only openly lesbian person running for the California State Assembly will be successful in 2008.
