Deb Mell is set to become the first open lesbian to serve in the Illinois General Assembly. With the fervent belief that one person can make a difference Mell is running for the 40th District State Representative seat in Illinois, the very district she was born and grew up in, the Northwest Side of Chicago. She began seriously considering this bid after participating in the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute Candidate & Campaign Training.
Mell is actively engaged in her community. She serves on Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s advisory council on human relations and is active with Equality Illinois. Deb has been recognized for her work by the National Organization of Women for her activism and the recipient of the Howard Brown Cornerstone Award for community excellence.
