Christine Kehoe is running for a second term in California’s 39th State Senate District. As an openly LGBT elected official, Christine has served in numerous leadership roles. From 1993-2000, she served on the San Diego City Council. Christine then went on to serve two terms in the California State Assembly from 2000-2004. Christine was elected to the California State Senate in 2004, adding another important voice to the LGBT Caucus within California’s state legislature. As a member of the state legislature, Christine has used her position to fight for and protect LGBT Americans. She sponsored AB 17-Equal Benefits in State Contracts, which prohibits a state agency from contracting with businesses that discriminate in providing employment benefits between an employee with a spouse and an employee with a registered domestic partner. The bill was signed by the Governor in 2004. Christine was the principal co-author of AB 205 that significantly expands the rights and responsibilities currently provided to registered domestic partners and their families to include nearly all the legal rights, benefits, responsibilities, duties, and obligations under state law currently available only to married couples. Recently, Christine authored her second Joint Resolution to urge Congress and the President to repeal the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy. Over the course of seven years as a state legislator, Christine has consistently fought for passage of legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry. In 2007, Christine was once again the principal co-author of Assembly Bill 43, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, which would allow same-sex couples to marry. Christine is in a strong position to win re-election and will continue serving as a tireless advocate for the entire LGBT community.
