Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams is running for mayor of Portland and, if elected, will be the first openly gay mayor of a top 50 city. Sam is the only elected official in the race so far, and this breakthrough
race is sure to make national
headlines in 2008 if Sam wins the seat.
Sam has proven that
he knows what it takes to win a big race like this, as he did in 2004 by
becoming the first openly LGBT official on the Portland City Commission (City
Council). Sam was campaign manager for former mayor Vera Katz and her chief of staff in the 1990s.
Sam has a record of
true leadership that is well respected in the city of Portland.
Sam has fought hard for the people of Portland to make the city a better
place. The Portland Tribune said that
Sam is, “The council’s most vocal advocate for public arts, neighborhoods,
diversity, transportation, economic development, and transparency and
accountability in government." Sam
has stood up for the LGBT community time after time by expanding Portland’s civil rights ordinance to include gender
identity and the creation of a domestic partner registry in Portland among many other things.
Sam has stood up for
us and now we need to stand up for him in this historical race.
Portland City Commissioner and mayoral candidate Sam Adams has nearly reached the 50 percent mark according to a recent poll. If Adams pulls in more than half of the vote in his primary, he will not face a general election.
