While Austin
remains a very progressive city with a significant LGBT population, no LGBT
person has ever been elected to its City Council.
Randi Shade hopes to be the first.
Although this is Randi’s first time running for office, she has a strong
campaign team and solid plan to win the May 10 general election. Due to her
work in the community, she has accumulated a solid base of volunteers who are
canvassing and phone banking on her behalf. The residents of Austin know Randi
as an 18-year resident of the city who has served her community in both public
and community service organizations including the Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Texas
Hillel Foundation and the Austin Clean Energy Initiative (which she helped
launch).
Even though she has never sought political office before, Randi has a
strong political background. She has worked on many campaigns, including serving
as Ann Richards’ fundraising coordinator for her successful 1990 gubernatorial
campaign.
Randi is running against Jennifer Kim a freshman incumbent that has had
a difficult first-term. She will need to
raise significant funds to compete against the incumbent to spread her messages
of smart growth, helping those in need, and working with and for all Austinites.
With your help, Randi can be the first openly LGBT member of Austin City
Council.
