In 2006, Kathy Webb became the first openly LGBT elected
official in the state of Arkansas.
Now, if elected as a Little Rock
District Court judge, Gary will become one of three openly LGBT elected
officials in the state.
After emerging as one of the top two vote-getters in his primary election, Gary faces Mark Leverett in a runoff election. One rival
is Mark Leverett, a former deputy
prosecuting attorney who has strong name-recognition. He served as an alderman in a nearby
city. However, he does not have the
judicial experience that Sullivan has, nor does he have the backing of the
legal community that Sullivan has garnered.
For the last 15 years, Gary has owned and managed a highly-successful general law
practice in Little Rock,
and has successfully carried hundreds of cases to trial or appeal.
Gary has served on the board of
directors of the Ryan White Center and has provided pro-bono legal services to
HIV/AIDS patients and their families. He
has also served as the Vice President of the Diamond State Rodeo Association,
which is the Arkansas
chapter of the International Gay Rodeo Association. He also serves on the board
of the Gertrude Remmel
Butler Childe
Development Center,
a child care and pre-school operated by the United
Methodist Church
in Little Rock.
Gary recently attended GLLI’s Candidate
and Campaign Training in Las Vegas.
