As an incumbent state legislator, Carl Sciortino will continue to defend LGBT rights in the Bay State.
Carl represents the 34th Middlesex district, which encompasses neighborhoods in Somerville and Medford. In the Massachusetts’ House of Representatives, he serves on the Joint Committees of Transportation, Public Health, and Community Development & Small Businesses.
During his first two terms in the state legislature, Carl has aggressively pursued equality for all LGBT residents. He took a leadership role in the defeat of the Constitutional amendment that would have taken away Massachusetts’ same-sex marriage rights. He filed the first and only bill to add transgender individuals to the protections of the civil rights, non-discrimination, and hate crimes statutes. During the state budget process he championed funding for LGBT causes, specifically for safe schools, GSAs, the Commission on LGBT youth, same-sex domestic violence service programs and LGBT senior citizen programs. In addition to LGBT related issues, Carl was successful in passing the nation’s strongest buffer-zone law, giving reproductive healthcare facilities an added public safety measure for their patients and staff. He also helped pass the nation’s highest minimum wage of $8/hour and health care reform. He passed amendments to the state budget which resulted in increased funding for the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP) and Hepatitis-C prevention and treatment programs.
The Victory Fund first endorsed Carl in 2004, when he successfully defeated a conservative Democratic incumbent. Prior to serving in the legislature, he worked in the field of public health as a research manager at a community health center specializing in HIV/AIDS. Carl faces a challenger in his primary election and needs significant support to both defeat his current opponent and ward off any other potential opponents.
