Rosemary Lehmberg hopes to replace a retiring 30-year incumbent as the next Travis County District Attorney. The current seatholder, Ronnie Earle, has endorsed her for the position.
Rosemary has served as the First Assistant to District Attorney Earle for the past ten years. In this position, she has handled the day-to-day operations of the office, set and implemented policy and worked on public corruption cases at the highest level.
Not only does the Travis County District Attorney have jurisdiction over felonies that occur within the county, the officeholder also handles public corruption cases due to the fact that the state capitol resides within the county.
Rosemary faces three Democratic opponents, all of whom are assistant district attorneys. However, as the First Assistant to the current District Attorney for over a decade, Rosemary has more experience and knowledge in this position than any of her opponents. There are no Republicans or independents on the ballot, so the next District Attorney will be determined in the March 4 primary with a potential runoff election on April 8.
In addition to the endorsement of the incumbent, Rosemary has received the endorsement of many of the Austin area Democratic clubs, such as Central Austin, North by Northwest, West Austin, Lake Travis, Capital Area Asian-Americans, Texas Environmental Democrats, Capital Area Young Democrats, and the Stonewall Democrats. She has also been endorsed by the Austin Lesbian and Gay Political Caucus and Austin Women’s Political Caucus. The Austin Chronicle, the most widely read alternative newspaper in Austin, also endorsed her.
