While Utah has acquired three openly LGBT legislators,
Jackie Biskupski will always be known as its first.
Jackie first ran for office in 1998 after Rep. Gene Davis
declared his intention to run for State Senate and asked her to run for his
seat. Ever since winning that first election, she has consistently won nearly
80 percent of the vote.
During her time in office, Jackie has strongly opposed
anti-gay legislation, including 2004’s ban on marriage equality. Despite the
constitutional amendment’s eventual passage, Biskupski gave emotional appeals
against the discriminatory legislation.
She said: "I
am not the only lesbian you know. In every community, we are your friends, your
family, co-workers and neighbors. We come in all races and ethnicity. We live
in every county in the state, some with children and some without. We work hard
and pay taxes, make positive contributions in our community."
Currently, with the help of Equality Utah and Rep. Johnson,
Jackie is working to secure the Anti-Discrimination Act Amendments, which would
prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender
identity.

legislature.
