Kriss Worthington’s credentials as an advocate for the LGBT
community go on and on. As the first openly gay man elected to the Berkeley
City Council, Kriss successfully made the city the first in the country to
support marriage equality. Under his watch, the city passed legislation that
required training for the Berkeley police department to undergo LGBT
sensitivity training, including a four-hour session on transgender awareness.
Having served on the City Council since 1996, Kriss now
wants to ascend to the state legislature to replace termed-out Assemblywoman
Loni Hancock. The Berkeley Daily Planet wrote
a glowing editorial about Kriss, claiming that he was the most able
candidate for the position by far:
“Kriss Worthington, whom we’ve known for the 11 years he’s
been on the Berkeley City Council, would make a very fine representative of the
urban East Bay in the state assembly. We can’t imagine that anyone could do a
better job. Kriss is phenomenally hard-working and very smart. Anyone who
watches Berkeley City Council meetings knows that he’s the guy who follows the
ball when most of his colleagues are wool-gathering. There are … other
candidates in the Democratic race now, nice guys all but no match for Kriss in
either experience or skill.”
Kriss’ race is exteremely competitive. He will be running
against a fellow Berkeley city councilmember and an official from nearby
Richmond.
