Since his election to the state
legislature in 2004, Jason has co-authored dramatic prison reform legislation
aimed at reducing crime while saving tens of millions of dollars in prison
costs. Called “Justice Reinvestment,”
the bill fosters alternatives to incarceration that include investing in drug
and alcohol treatment programs, transitional housing, and community-based solutions. Jason also supported an increase in Vermont’s
minimum wage to among the highest in the country, including an automatic annual
adjustment for inflation.
Jason’s tenure as a representative
has been marked by advances in LGBT equality.
In 2007, he successfully spearheaded an effort to pass a bill
prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity. Vermont has forbidden discrimination based on
sexual orientation since 1991, but the passage of the Gender Identity
Non-Discrimination Act made the state one of just nine to extend the same
protections to transgendered individuals.
Jason also co-sponsored a bill to grant marriage equality to same-sex
couples.
Jason won his seat narrowly in
2004 and faced strong opposition in 2006.
He serves in a two-seat district and so will face multiple opponents in
the fall. With your help, he can
continue to serve the citizens of Vermont and work for equality for the LGBT
community. Click here to donate to Jason's campaign.
