Last year, LGBT Iowans won the right to legally marry in their state. Now that they’ve won that right, safeguarding it is of paramount concern to all fair-minded residents.

Four-term State Senator Matt McCoy has been instrumental in promoting equality across Iowa for years. When a ban marriage equality was proposed in 2005, Republicans controlled the state Senate – without Matt’s eloquent advocacy, many onlookers believe the ban would have passed. Not only has he rallied support for marriage equality, he also supported anti-discrimination and anti-bullying legislation.

First endorsed by the Victory Fund in 2006, McCoy is currently vice-chair of One Iowa's Board of Directors, Iowa’s largest LGBT advocacy group.

Matt’s accomplishments in office have been impressive. During his previous terms, he fought to make Iowa workplaces smoke-free, increase funding for education, support property and income tax relief and provide health care to children. In fact, he sponsored legislation that ensures that children’s dental insurance will be covered by employers

In light of the economic downturn, Matt has worked to improve unemployment insurance and to work on Iowa’s economic development.

“During the deepening national recession, the Iowa Legislature has acted boldly to create jobs, rebuild communities impacted by last year’s disasters, invest in Iowa’s infrastructure, and promote long-term economic growth,” he said.

As the first and only openly gay state legislator in Iowa, Scott’s voice will be invaluable in the state Senate in the coming term. Protect marriage equality and LGBT rights by supporting Matt’s campaign. Contribute today.
