Not only is Tammy Baldwin the first out lesbian to ever win election to Congress as a non-incumbent, she’s currently the only out lesbian to currently serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. With that distinction, onlookers consider Tammy to be one of the nation’s leading LGBT advocates and an effective, motivated lawmaker.
First elected in 1998, Tammy has proven to be a fierce and tenacious advocate for the LGBT community. She has co-sponsored a plethora of LGBT rights bills including a bill adding gender and sexual orientation to the existing hate crimes law as well as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). During the ENDA debate in 2007, Tammy introduced an amendment on the House floor that would include gender identity to the bill.
Tammy’s legislative priorities aren’t limited to her tireless, high-level work for LGBT rights. As a committed champion of granting nationwide health care, she has worked across party lines to find a solution.
Her accomplishments include the reauthorization of a program that provides cancer screenings to low-income and uninsured women as well as the passage of a bill that increases benefits to service members who lose their vision. Furthermore, Tammy led Congressional efforts to repeal federal restrictions on stem cell research.
Tammy combined her two passions for health care and LGBT advocacy over the summer of 2009 by introducing the Ending Health Disparities for LGBT Americans Act. The bill would establish non-discrimination policies for all federal health programs, provide funding for cultural competence training for health care providers, extend Medicare benefits to same-sex domestic partners, create a new office of LGBT Health within in the Department of Health and Human Services and more.
“Our current health care system fails LGBT Americans on many levels,” she said. “Although we have ample anecdotal evidence of these disparities, the federal government lacks even the most basic data on sexual orientation and gender identity and health. This bill invests in research and takes critical steps towards improving the health of LGBT Americans and their families.”
Tammy’s national work on behalf of LGBT Americans has been transformative. Donate to her campaign today to support one of our most vigorous champions.
