In 2002, Dave Coulter’s tenacious campaigning enabled him to defeat a 20-year incumbent for a seat on the Oakland County, Mich. Commission. Now in his fourth term, Dave is preparing to tackle an even bigger challenge – winning a seat in the Michigan State Senate.

During his tenure on the county commission, Dave proactively addressed a myriad of issues sensitive to his constituents including health care and jobs. He helped create a prescription drug and dental discount programs for Oakland County residents in addition to a successful health insurance program that now serves more than 5,000 low-income county residents. Dave also supported successful programs to lure growing technology companies to the area and advocated for greater public and mass transit.

“For seven years as Oakland County Commissioner, I’ve worked to create jobs, increase access to health care and redevelop the older communities in south Oakland County,” said Dave. “And as the board’s Democratic Leader, I’ve helped negotiate budgets that were both balanced and on-time while still delivering excellent service to our residents. I know it can be done, because I’ve done it.”

Dave faces strong competition in the decisive Democratic primary and needs enough resources to run a strong campaign. However, he has already started reaching out to voters to tell them about his plans for his district.

A former executive director of the Michigan AIDS fund, Dave is the highest-ranking LGBT elected official in Michigan. He is a graduate of the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute’s Candidate & Campaign Training as well as the recipient of a Bohnett fellowship for the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government program.
