New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is one of the most high-profile and outspoken LGBT leaders in America. Often called one of the most powerful women in New York politics, Quinn’s status as an out lesbian means her voice is amplified when she speaks about issues important to the LGBT community, and it means other state power brokers listen.
Quinn first won election to her city council district seat in 1999, representing Manhattan neighborhoods such as Chelsea, the West Village and Hell’s Kitchen. In January 2006, at the age of 39, after serving on the city council for almost seven years, she was elected city council speaker by her peers.
Quinn is proud of her Irish heritage, but for years she has refused to march in the city’s largest St. Patrick's Day parade because its organizers, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, forbids LGBT New Yorkers from marching while displaying any signs of the community or LGBT Pride.
The Victory Fund has endorsed Quinn throughout her career not only because of her strong record of public service and her status as an out lesbian, but because few LGBT Americans have so deftly combined their public service careers with remarkable and indefatigable advocacy for the LGBT community both locally and nationally.
We are proud of Speaker Quinn, and we urge you to support this out and outstanding public official.
