Victory Fund Congratulates Mayor Denise Simmons

Washington, D.C.--The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund issued the following statement regarding the election of Denise Simmons to be the next mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Simmons is the first openly lesbian African-American to be elected mayor of any U.S. city.

Cambrige mayors are elected by their peers on the city council.

"We are enormously proud of Mayor Simmons.  Like Mayor Ken Reeves before her, she is among our community's trailblazers.  Today is a day to celebrate another broken glass ceiling," said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund.
