Gay rights activist Patrick Flaherty holds a commanding lead in fundraising for Milwaukee's 3rd Aldermanic District race, campaign finance reports show.
Flaherty is one of eight candidates competing in the Feb. 19 primary to replace outgoing Ald. Mike D'Amato, representing the east side and Riverwest.
As of Dec. 31, Flaherty had raised $18,179, including a $1,000 donation to his own campaign. He was followed by freelance journalist Nik Kovac, with $12,521, including a $250 donation and an $822 loan to his own campaign; community activist Sura Faraj, with $5,949, including an $825 loan to her own campaign; legal staffer John Connelly, with $5,136, including a $1,815 donation to his own campaign; and D'Amato aide Sam McGovern-Rowen, with $3,636, including a $100 donation to his own campaign.
Among the other candidates, cafe owner Matt Nelson raised $165, postal worker David Schroeder reported no financial activity and no report had been received as of Monday from telephone worker Dan Fouliard.
The campaign reports also showed that Kovac had raised $3,803, or 30% of his money, from out of state. Much of that cash was donated at an October fundraiser in New York City, where Kovac previously worked as a community newspaper editor. None of his rivals raised more than $1,000 outside Wisconsin.
