Frank Ferri faces two challengers in special election

Wed, Nov 28th 2007, 10:39

Victory-endorsed candidate Frank Ferri won the Democratic nomination for a special election to the Rhode Island state Assembly on Tuesday, October 23 with a resounding 57% of the vote, but he now faces two tough opponents in the General Election to represent the people of Warwick.

In a district that trends Democratic, there is a well-known Independent former City Councilmember in the race that could divert enough votes away from Frank to play the role of spoiler. Frank, who is the co-chair of Marriage Equality Rhode Island, has a tremendous coalition of progressive groups behind him including Rhode Island NOW, The Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island, SEIU 1199 and the United Nurses and Allied Professionals.

Frank would be the first openly LGBT legally married person to win his election as a first-time candidate; he wed his partner in Canada and the marriage is currently recognized by the State of Rhode Island. However, a Supreme Court decision is currently pending that could change that acceptance. Today, you have an unique opportunity to send a strong message to the state of Rhode Island by making sure that Frank Ferri has a voice in the State Legislature if the courts decide to toss this issue back to the legislature, as New Jersey and Massachusetts did.

Please stand with Frank Ferri today and be sure that he is enable to implement a successful strategy that allowed him to win the primary. With your generous gift of $250, $100, or $50, the campaign will be able to break through the 2008 presidential rhetoric and ensure that voters turnout in a special election only five days after Thanksgiving.
