Victory candidates vie for office in Oregon

Tue, May 20th 2008, 17:09

Victory-endorsed candidates Sam Adams and Kate Brown face potentially decisive primaries this evening as voters turn in their ballots. Adams hopes to become the next mayor of Portland while Brown seeks the office of Secretary of State.

For the latest information on both races, visit the Oregon Secretary of State's Web site

Sam Adams is embroiled in a heated primary to become mayor of Portland. If elected, he'd become the first openly gay mayor ever elected in a top 30 U.S. city. If Sam wins more than 50 percent of the vote tonight, he will automatically win the race.

Kate Brown could become the nation's first openly bisexual secretary of state.  The field in Kate's Democratic primary is extremely competitive, but she has been endorsed by heavy-hitters like SEIU, NARAL and Emily's List. A win tonight would mean that she would face a Republican opponent in the fall.
