Former State Senator Wesley Chesbro has announced his endorsement of Maddy Hirshfield in the race for Sonoma County Supervisor, District 5.
Chesbro represented western Sonoma County and the North Coast in the State Senate for eight years. He is currently a candidate for the 1st Assembly District seat being vacated by Assemblywoman Patty Berg who has also endorsed Hirshfield's candidacy.
Chesbro distinguished himself as a champion for the environment, mental health and rural communities in the State Senate. This year, he has been a vocal critic of Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposal to close state parks.
“We need experienced local advocates like Maddy to keep pressure on state lawmakers to assure that Sonoma County gets its fair share of essential state services. Maddy and I have worked together on this in the past. She understands what’s at stake and has always done what’s right. She will be an excellent supervisor,” Chesbro said.
Hirshfield also recently received the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 551. Along with earlier endorsements from the Carpenters Union Locals 751 & 35, Hirshfield is emerging as labor’s first choice.
Hirshfield said, "I am so honored by Wesley's support. He's a proven leader in all the areas so important to our district and to me personally. We've worked together so well in the past. I look forward to working with him again." She added, "The support I'm receiving from legislators, past and present, as well as Labor, other organizations, and 5th district residents is truly humbling. I will not let them down."
In addition to endorsements from hundreds of Sonoma County residents and community leaders, Hirshfield also has received support from more current and former legislators than any other candidate for Supervisor. In addition to Chesbro and Berg, Hirshfield has been endorsed by Congressman Mike Thompson, Former Senate President pro Tem John Burton, State Senators Carole Migden and Sheila Kuehl, and Assemblymen Mark Leno, and John Laird.
