Two world leaders at NATO conference are openly gay

Fri, Jun 8th 2012, 17:12

Denis Dison, vice president of communications for the Victory Fund, whose mission is to elect LGBT politicians, said certain legitimacy can only come from a democratic election.

"When they speak to their colleagues, it's quite different than speaking on behalf of an NGO," he said.

Dison added that when politicians like Sigurðardóttir are working to solve global issues like the financial crisis, it can make all gay people seem more conventional.

"The fact that she's an out lesbian and speaking about issues that everyone else cares about and is working on, makes people become aware that we are professionals and leaders just like everybody else is," Dison said. "Our job as out LGBT people is not solely to be LGBT advocates but to be, when we can, leaders of whole communities that work on issues that effect everybody."

The Victory Fund: Making History, One LGBT Candidate At A Time

Fri, Jun 8th 2012, 17:11

Just two days after the victory, I received an email from The Victory Fund asking "Are you next?" I have known for a long time that running for office is in my future, but this campaign, and now The Victory Fund, had placed politics front and center in my present. The email encouraged me to apply to their "Onward to Victory" contest to earn an all-expenses-paid candidate and campaign staff training. Working on campaigns is exactly what I want to be doing right now, and my own run may be far sooner than I had ever anticipated.

Inside Obama's LGBT Donor Machine: How The President Will Make Millions From Gay Marriage Push

Fri, Jun 8th 2012, 17:06

Denis Dison of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund was careful to point out that while Obama's gay marriage endorsement will be a boost to his campaign, the gay community has donated generously from the very start. "It's not as if people who are self-identified as gay or lesbian didn't bundle before," he said. "It's that they're doing it openly. That sends a message to the candidate they're supporting. We're behaving a little more like the corporate world in that regard."

UPDATED BREAKING NEWS: Obama supports marriage equality

Fri, Jun 8th 2012, 16:52

Those successes came after determined efforts by coalitions of national, state and local LGBT groups, as well as tireless lobbying by the men and women whose lives would be most affected by these victories," Wolfe said.

Gay candidates run openly for Pennsylvania office: 'A remarkable amount of progress'

Tue, Feb 28th 2012, 10:11

With three "open and out" candidates seeking state House seats this year, chances are better than ever that Pennsylvania's gay and lesbian community will have its first known voice in the General Assembly at this time next year.
